What does repost mean on TikTok?
Reposting is TikTok's way of passing a video on without making one. The short version: it shows someone else's video to your followers, under your name, and keeps it on your profile.
A repost shares someone else's video with your friends and community. It appears in their For You feed labelled as a repost, with your profile photo and nickname, and it is kept on your profile under the repost tab. You do not upload anything, and you can remove a repost at any time.
How it works
According to TikTok's Help Center, a repost appears in other people's For You feed like any other post, but it is labelled as a repost along with the photo and nickname of the person who reposted it. It is also kept on your profile, under the repost tab.
You are not uploading a copy. The video is still the creator's; your repost is what puts it in front of your audience. A repost can carry a line of text from you, and people who see it can reply to it.
How to repost
TikTok documents three ways, all in the app:
- Tap the Share button on the video, then Repost.
- Press and hold the video, then tap Repost.
- If a friend has reposted it, tap their profile photo at the bottom, then Repost.
There is no confirmation step: once you tap Repost, it is reposted. Because Repost sits inside the Share menu, it is easy to confuse with sharing. The difference is in TikTok repost vs share.
Who sees it
On a public account, anyone who opens your profile can see your reposts. On a private account, only your followers can. The details, and the ways to limit it, are in who can see your reposts on TikTok.
Undoing it
Removing a repost is the same three routes in reverse, described in how to delete a repost on TikTok. Removing it deletes the replies to it too. People often call this “unrepost”, although TikTok itself does not use that word.
