TikTok repost vs share
Both start from the same Share button, which is why people mix them up. They do different things: a repost broadcasts under your name, a share goes where you send it.
A repost shows a video to your followers and community under your name, and keeps it on your profile's repost tab. A share sends it to the people or apps you choose, such as a direct message or another platform, and does not add anything to your profile.

When you repost
You pass the video to your audience. It appears in their For You feed labelled as a repost with your photo and nickname, and it stays on your profile until you remove it. On a public account, anyone who opens your profile can see it. More in what does repost mean on TikTok?
When you share
You tap Share and pick where it goes: a direct message, a link, or another app. TikTok notes one detail: if you send a video to a friend on another platform, it also sends it to them on TikTok, provided they tap the link and allow direct messages. Nothing is added to your profile.
If you reposted when you meant to share
That is common, because Repost is one of the options in the Share menu and there is no confirmation step. Remove it the same way: Share → Delete repost, or press and hold the video and tap Remove repost. All three routes are in how to delete a repost on TikTok.
